Heavy Equipment Related Questions
Q. What is EquipCoat®?
A. EquipCoat® is a clear polymer resin used on new and used machinery to help prevent rust, corrosion, and paint fade.
Q. We have new wheel loaders at a sea-port unloading salt. We see rust appear on engine parts within a few weeks of operation, hydraulic hose ends, and nuts-and-bolts; even the radiator is starting to rust. Can these all be coated & protected?
A. Yes, by coating the engine and interior parts and the radiator with EquipCoat®, you can help prevent corrosion. EquipCoat® will also reduce corrosion on all nuts-and-bolts.
Q. Is this the same clear coat used on cars?
A. No, EquipCoat® is very different in chemical structure from automotive lacquer clear coat. Automotive clear coats are usually catalyzed coatings that don’t have flexibility. EquipCoat® is self-annealing, will blend to itself, and will remain flexible throughout its life. EquipCoat® will never yellow, peel or flake, as long as it is appropriately applied.
Q. How long does it last?
A. EquipCoat® can last for many years and can be maintained with periodic cleaning. Touch up, and reapplication may be needed in circumstances where your equipment is exposed to harsh chemicals and under heavy impact.
Q. How is EquipCoat® applied?
A. With the proper application training, EquipCoat® is applied within a day. Using the Crystal Shield System™, the procedure starts with removing any pre-existing coatings such as Cosmoline, Fluid Film®, and any exposed grease.
The next step is a thorough washing. After the machine has dried, all glass and large decals are covered. At this point, the EquipCoat® is typically applied using an automotive-type spray gun.
Q. Should EquipCoat® be applied to the plastic engine cover and fenders?
A. It is not necessary to use EquipCoat® on plastic or fiberglass parts as these will not rust. However, EquipCoat® application is recommended for older faded plastic parts to restore gloss and color.
